explorations and endeavors of ian jean gilpin cozzens

57-59 Curtis St.

(this print is available in the store!)

A print of a (somewhat) typical "triple-decker" apartment building in my neighborhood. These buildings were mass-constructed all over Providence (and Worcester, and Pawtucket, and Central Falls, and...) from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, mostly as housing for the mill workers. Some are totally unique, but even ones that were originally built to the same plan have been modified and changed over time, making each one subtly different.

I live in an apartment similar to this, as do many of my friends. Their interior layouts are nearly-infinite variations on the theme of: "How can we live comfortably, very close to each other, in what is not a very big space?" Each apartment offers some interesting solutions and adaptations to this problem.

I'm hoping to make a series of these small prints, each studying a different building, but that project is more-or-less on the back burner for now...
